MANDARMANI (The Goa Of the East)
Mandarmani is a beach resort , It is almost 180km from Kolkata Airport on the Kolkata-Digha route and just 14km from Chaulkhola . It is calm and quite beach where non can disturb you except the noise of the waves, relax, swim and enjoy the beach. You are not likely to have many visitors around and that's the beauty of this beach.

At the southern tip of West Bengal lies the Indian Sundarbans, a stretch of impenetrable mangrove forest, is about 4,262 sq km, of which 2,125 sq km is occupied by mangrove forest across 56 islands and the balance is under water. The Sundarbans forest is home to more than 400 tigers.

The Royal Bengal Tigers(The endangered species) have developed a unique characteristic of swimming in the saline waters, and are world famous for their man-eating tendencies.

The dropping roots of The Great Banyan tree in the Botanical Garden
Botanical Garden : This garden was founded by East India Company way back in 1787 by the bank of Ganges in Howrah on about 107 acres of land. This garden has about 50,000 plants and trees of 12,000 varieties. The main attraction of the garden is the Great Banyan tree. It is having the world's largest canopy of 404 m circumference. The tree is about 32 m in height and about 2880 dropping roots. The main trunk of the tree is difficult to find.

Mayapur is situated in the Nadia District of West Bengal and is the center for the International Sri Krishna Consciousness or Iskcon, it is the Head quarters of west Bengal, here the Chandrodaya Temple is the main attraction. There are many monks or sadhus in Mayapur ( mostly foreigners) - who have renounced the worldly pleasures and joined the Krishna movement. The most important of all however is the beautiful Iskcon Temple also known as Sri Chaitanya Candrodaya Temple that attracts thousands of devotees and tourists from different parts of India and world. The temple has a statue of Lord Radha Krishna along with the eight gopis. Mayapur is a vegetarian, non-smoking and non-drinking town.

Shantiniketan means abode peace. Santiniketan is a University and a centre of learning. It was owned by the Tagore family. This open-air school was started by Nobel price(1913) winner Rabindranath Tagore. It is a centre for oriental education and culture It was here that Rabindranath Tagore started Patha Bhavan the school of his ideals, whose vital principle was that education in a natural environment would be more enjoyable and rewarding, later the school was expanded into a university. Indira Gandhi the late & former Prime Minister of India was one of its more illustrious students. Kala Bhavana is the art college of Santiniketan, which is known as one of the best art colleges in the world. The natural beauty and the serene ambiance of Santiniketan is perfect for a weekend getaway.

It was the capital of Bengal during Nawab Siraj-ud-daulla's reign. The Nawab Murshid Quli Khan made Murshidabad the capital city of Sube Bangla, comprising of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa hence it was named after him. The East India Company took over Murshidabad after defeating Nawab Siraj-ud-daulla's at the Battle of Plassey; There are some beautiful palaces, mosques and monuments here, apart from beautiful handloom silks and handicraft. The Hazarduari Palace, or the palace with a thousand doors is the chief tourist attraction of Murshidabad.

Bandel Church
In 1530, the Portuguese sailors began to open up trade in Bengal. The river Hoogly was easily navigable. The ships anchored at Garden Reach and Betor the opposite banks of the Hoogly river. Whenever the ships arrived from Goa, incalculable thatched houses were erected; commercials and markets were flaunted at the bank of the river. The Portuguese built a church in Chandannagar in 1599, which was destroyed by the British in 1630. Bandel is 43 km north of Kolkata.

We take a walk at the this church then visit the Institut de Chandernagore: After the Portuguese the French arrived in Bengal, they built a French colony at Chandanagar in 1673.This is where the French landed and controlled. Some French-style buildings can be seen here. Till about 30 years ago, the people of Chandernagore could speak a bit of French.
